Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is an endodontic treatment to repair and protect a severely damaged or infected tooth. The word “endo” means “from the inside” in Greek, so the procedure is for a dentist to remove bacteria, damaged or dead tissue from the inside of the tooth.

Detail

Root canal treatment or endodontics is the treatment of inflamed, infected or dead pulp without damaging other teeth, gums or nerves. Dental pulp is a soft substance composed of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue in the center of the tooth. During a typical root canal treatment, the nerve and pulp are removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. If left untreated, the tissue around the tooth becomes infected and abscesses may form. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the ends of the tooth roots. Most root canal treatments involve at least two visits to the dentist. At the first appointment, after the problem has been pinpointed and measured with a detailed x-ray, the infected nerve tissue is removed and the area is sealed with a topical antibiotic. This usually relieves pain in the tooth. At the second visit, the root canal is cleaned, disinfected, shaped, measured and filled to prevent re-infection.

Root Canal

It refers to the actual canals or stems of the tooth, called the pulp. The pulp is the tissue responsible for the development, nutrition and defense of the tooth and gives vitality to the tooth. The pulp can become inflamed through caries, trauma, cracks in the tooth and blood, or become infected as a result of the settlement of microorganisms. In the early stages of the infection, the patient may not feel any pain. Without professional care, the infection can develop into toothache, swelling or even a tooth abscess. If such situations are encountered, the pulp tissue should be removed, the canal cavity should be cleaned, shaped and filled with canal fillers. All of these procedures are called root canal treatment or more commonly known as root canal treatment.
After root canal treatment, the tooth must be permanently restored. Repairing the loss of hard tissue in the tooth and restoring the tooth play an important role in the success of root canal treatment. A tooth restored with appropriate techniques can serve the patient for many years or even a lifetime. However, it should not be forgotten that the oral care of the patient directly affects the life of the tooth.

How long does tooth numbness and numbness last in root canal treatment?

In most patients, the numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours. It is normal for the teeth to ache for a few days after root canal treatment. If pain is still felt after more than 3 days, we recommend that you consult your dentist.

Do I have to wait for root canal treatment?

If you delay having root canal treatment for too long, you risk serious dental problems and medical conditions. When a tooth is left untreated for longer than it should, the bacteria found in the infected dental pulp spreads to the gums and jaw. This can cause abscesses on the teeth.

What happens if I don't have root canal treatment?

If you leave a root canal problem untreated, bacteria found in infected pulp can migrate from the roots of your tooth to your jaw and gum tissue, causing abscesses that require urgent care. Abscesses also cause inflammation throughout the body. In addition, bacteria can spread to nearby teeth and cause the same disease to occur in other teeth.

Do I need antibiotics after root canal treatment?

Antibiotics are not required after endodontic treatment unless there is a special situation. If a necessary situation arises, our doctor will direct you to use antibiotics.
